Another Berlin Wall Falls: Roe v. Wade Overturned

It looks like we’ve had another Berlin Wall moment in Western culture with the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade yesterday in its Dobbs v. Jackson decision. In the 1980s there were very few people who took Ronald Reagan’s words to tear down the Wall seriously. We thought, it’s a nice sentiment, Ronnie, but we all know it’s wishful thinking, and not going to happen in our lifetimes. Then a little more than two years later, the Wall came down. There is a lesson in that, but more on that in a moment. Those of us who felt that way in the 80s, felt the same way about Roe. That would also not likely come down in our lifetimes, but it too has fallen. The reason for the pessimism about Roe is that the courts are where the left gets it way because they can’t do it via the democratic process. Conservatives have experienced disappointment because of the courts for decades, until Donald Trump became president. Think about that.

If someone had told you ten, twenty, thirty or more years ago that Donald Trump would be instrumental in getting Roe overturned, we all would have said to that person, Say no to drugs! Trump? Billionaire real estate developer? Hedonistic narcissist clearly liberal Donald Trump who donates money to Democrats, that Donald Trump? Absurd! But in fact, he is the one we have to thank that finally Roe v. Wade has been assigned to the dustbin of history, just as Ronald Reagan was instrumental in assigning the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union to that same dustbin. God certainly has a sense of humor. It would be nice if the NeverTrumper conservatives who loath Trump would admit this, but I doubt they will. Trump Derangement Syndrome seems to be a real psychological malady that keeps people from acknowledging the truth. I know Trump is an acquired taste that some people will never acquire, but he was the most conservative president in our lifetimes. Even Reagan wouldn’t speak live at the March for Life, nor the Bushes, but Trump did.

Roe being overturned doesn’t mean that abortion is illegal in America, only that the decision whether it is or not is returned to the states. Many states are already declaring abortion illegal, thank God, but the battle now changes locations. My consistent prayer is that abortion will one day become as unthinkable in America as slavery. It should because at least the point of slavery wasn’t to kill people, while abortion is by definition killing people. There is no debate about that anymore, only whether those little people deserve to live. This ruling overturning a horribly bad Supreme Court decision will likely save millions of babies’ lives. It’s amazing to me how angry lefties get when they mothers can’t have carte blanche to kill their offspring. Moloch would be proud.

I mentioned above the lesson in this connected to the Berlin Wall. I remember seeing a bumper sticker some years ago: Speaking truth is treason in an empire of lies. The communism of the Soviet Union was as much an empire of lies as is the progressive left in modern American politics and culture; both were birthed in the evil heart and mind of Karl Marx, compliments of the devil. The narrative, whatever the issue might be, attached to their political ideology is all that counts, truth be damned. They don’t even believe in such a thing as truth. Unfortunately, for them, truth exists because Truth exists, and an empire built on lies cannot and will not last. This is why I said in a previous post that the cultural divide in the West today is between those who believe in Truth (and truth), and those who do not. Reality can only be mocked for so long because as the Apostle Paul says, “God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” And notice the result when a man (or woman) sows to the flesh (sarx- σάρξ, in Paul’s theology where the principle of sin, i.e., obsession with self, lies): They will reap destruction.

We are at a propitious time in American (and Western) history, and the opportunity to speak Christian Truth to power and it make a real difference has never been greater. As I argued in my previous posts (and some to come) about Christian nationalism, this started to bubble up with Brexit, and the same dynamic made its way into America with the candidacy and then election of Donald Trump. I consider Trump “The Great Revealer.” There is something about the man that God used to break the Democrat-left, and the media, and many so-called conservatives. They could not and still cannot help themselves (witness the lies of the J-6 “committee”), so they have all been exposed for what they are and have always been: enemies of America. (BTW, I don’t consider RINO’s enemies of America, but there is something even more insidious about people who talk a good conservative game, and then enable the Democrat-left to destroy America.)

The reaping of destruction that Paul promises is becoming more apparent than ever before. The Democrat-left can’t help themselves, and God bless ‘em, they keep doubling down. They become increasingly unpopular the more people see that their policies and beliefs lead to real human misery and death, including the killing of pre-born children in their mothers’ wombs (I call it fetal genocide). I’ll end this with a quote from a Francis Schaeffer book I just started re-reading from 1981 called, A Christian Manifesto. Speaking of a shift in people’s worldview from something Christian if even vaguely so,

toward something completely different—toward a worldview based upon the idea that the final reality is impersonal matter or energy shaped into its present form by impersonal chance. These two worldviews stand in complete antithesis to each other in content and also in their natural results . . . not only in how they understand the nature of reality and existence. They also inevitably produce totally different results. The operative word is inevitably. It is not just that they happen to bring forth different results, but it is absolutely inevitable that they will bring forth different results.

It is that inevitably that we are seeing more clearly than ever in the year of our Lord 2022, and it is our great opportunity. Let us grab it with gusto and faith in “the ruler of all things.”

Christian Nationalism, What Is It, and Why We Should Embrace It

In my last post I promised I would define “Christian nationalism,” and why we ought to be Christian nationalists. It is actually rather simple. If we are Christians and we live in a nation, we should be Christian nationalists. First, we need to understand what nationalism is, and realize why it is so critically important in our time as it stands in stark contrast against globalism (when you see that word, think tyranny). The modern nation-state is a relatively new phenomenon in the history of the world. It only goes back to the Treaty of Westphalia that ended the 30-Years War in 1648 that established the concept of a sovereign nation with well-defined boundaries. Prior to that, military power determined boundaries which were ever shifting based on that power. Nationalism, however, refers to more than merely geographical boundaries, and on the political and cultural left it is considered downright dangerous. Unfortunately, there are many Christian leaders from various traditions, otherwise conservative, who also think nationalism is a negative, especially a kind of patriotic populist nationalism.

For these Christian leaders it isn’t so much the nation-state that is the problem, like it is with the globalists, it is thinking our nation is better than others. This criticism is specifically geared toward Patriotic Christian Americans who embrace something called American exceptionalism. For some reason with these folks, loving America and thinking it is the most exceptionally blessed country in the history of the world is something to be avoided. They’ll often warn that America is not a theocracy like ancient Israel, but I don’t know any Christian who thinks it is. God, however, has a relationship to every country on earth, and blesses or curses these nations to the degree they look to him as the ultimate governor and ruler of the nation. America is no doubt judged more harshly because she has been blessed most singly, and since I’m an American in America, that will be my focus in these posts.

Having said that, I will continue the discussion with Brexit, the movement in the UK to pull out of the European Union. The election to confirm England’s exit from the EU was on June 23, 2016, but the debate had been going on for a while. The two sides were predictable and the precursor to same dynamic that led to the very unlikely election of President Trump. The cultural elites, globalists all, thought Brexit had no more chance of passing than Trump had of winning later that year. They also thought British patriots were deplorables, in the infamous assertion of Hillary Clinton’s about Trump’s followers. I bring this up because it is of the same kind of patriotic nationalism that made the MAGA, or Make America Great Again, movement possible. Christian nationalists ought always to cheer on nations that stand against the globalists who think nations only get in the way of the enlightened globalist agenda.

This brings me to the Christian part of “Christian nationalism,” and why it is necessary. Secularism as commonly understood is an illusion that some kind of moral or metaphysical neutrality exists where religion won’t get in the way of a harmonious society; religion stands in the way of that. The wars of religion, which weren’t really wars of religion but an excuse for the power I mentioned above, are what led to the intellectual elite’s obsession with secularism. The problem that created war and misery, in this view, was religion. If only we get rid of religion, or at least make it a purely personal thing, then people will stop making war and killing people. John Lennon’s great secular anthem Imagine says it pathetically well:

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

 

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

A better secular globalist’s wet dream could not be found, lies built upon delusional lies. The religion and state-hating communists of the 20th century butchered a hundred million human beings in the throes of such lies; living life in peace, not so much. Such is the existential battle we now face, although seemingly not in such stark life and death terms. But make no mistake, the totalitarian leftists we now battle are every bit as deadly, if not as apparently bloody. Christianity, in fact, is the only hope for a truly harmonious society, one built on the commitment to Truth. We can have Christ or chaos.

I wrote recently that this commitment to truth is the dividing line in Western culture. This commitment is why not everyone has to embrace Christianity in the culture for the civilization to be Christian. In the entirety of Christian Western civilization there was never a time when everyone embraced Christianity. Rather, it was the Christian worldview, its morals, manners, and mores that were widely accepted. That is a more complicated battle, but a more hopeful one because victory is not determined by mere power. The totalitarian left’s only value is the will to power that serves their ideology, while truth is not relevant to them. Those who believe in Truth, however, can appreciate and embrace the worldview, morals, manners, and mores of Christianity without embracing the risen Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

This is a deeply significant point that I don’t think most Christians have really thought through, and there are a growing number of non-Christians, agnostics, and atheists who affirm that Christianity is central to, and necessary for, Western civilization to succeed. In other words, we have allies in this existential war against the totalitarian left who are not Christians, and this is also deeply significant. It also gives us reason to hope that the fundamentalist secularism that has been suffocating Western culture for the last 60 years will not last. It cannot last, or Western civilization is doomed. Thankfully, Truth is more powerful than lies because he who is The Truth exists and rules over all things (madidate on Ephesians 1:15-23 if you want hope). We have no idea what God in his providence has in store for America or Western civilization, but not fighting for it is not an option. If we complain, we must fight.

I hope to flesh all this out in, God willing, another book, but the point of these posts is to address what Christians might be able to do to save this greatest experiment in republican government in the history of the world. I will address that in my next post.

Christian Nationalism and Why I’m For It

In my previous post I wrote about President Eisenhower’s farewell address, and his warning about the military-industrial complex. I argued that Christians should be concerned about such things because our worldview addresses all things, and as Americans it is our responsibility as citizens of a self-governing republic to hold accountable those who govern. It is becoming increasingly clear that the radical leftist Marxists (who have completely taken over the Democrat Party) are committed to demonizing and silencing Christians. That is most obvious when it comes to issues of sexual morality where any questioning of “the narrative” is considered akin to racism, the greatest of modern sins. The Democrats and their media allies have even come to calling Christians who disagree with them, “Christian nationalists,” and that isn’t a compliment. Throw “white” into that description, and intimations of the Klan are not far away.

I’ve tried to steer away from politics on this blog because my focus has been on defending the truth of Christianity, but I’ve come to see part of defending this truth means we must apply our Christian faith to all of life, including politics. Many Christians, like many other Americans, are not “into” politics, but politics is “into” them, like it or not. There is no escape because to the leftists who dominate the culture and the Democrat Party everything is politics; ideology is all. They are fundamentally totalitarians. As David Horowitz has famously said, “Inside every progressive is a totalitarian screaming to get out.” That means they seek absolute control over everything and everyone, including our thoughts. They will never be satisfied with anything less. That means in the current cultural and political context, we cannot be left alone and free to live our own lives. Anyone who thinks we can, is delusional. Witness the last two years of an ostensible pandemic, an excuse for totalitarians to control the masses who just don’t know any better.

We are at a point in American history (worldwide in fact) where we need to take to heart a warning attributed to Edmund Burke, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” This is a difficult truth for most people of a conservative bent to accept because such people, me included, just want to be left alone to live our lives in peace. The problem is the leftists (aka Marxists, progressives, Democrats) will not let us do so. Their fundamentally totalitarian natures will not allow it, and thus if we do not fight them, they will in one way or another control us, and not for our good. As I said above, for them ideology is all, and only when every American embraces and affirms that ideology, will they “leave us alone.” Of course, that will never happen, thus we must fight, fight, fight! Or in the words of one of my newfound heroes of the last year and a half, Steve Bannon, action, action action!

After the election of 2020 was so egregiously stolen from President Trump, I was understandably depressed. It wasn’t too long after that distressing time that I stumbled upon Bannon’s podcast, War Room. As I’ve said many times, he got me out of the fetal position I’d fallen into, and to mix metaphors, he talked me off the ledge. One of the things I’ve most appreciated about him is something he consistently affirms that it is very easy for us to forget: we have agency. As God’s image bearers, we can influence things. He has made us responsible beings who can transform reality in innumerable ways. We forget how profound this is, and how it transformed the ancient world into the modern world. It can still transform our world; it does every day, but we’re mostly blind to the profundity of it.

That is because our tendency as fallen sinners is to plead the victim and complain. Oh, it is so much easier to complain! Easier to whine and moan and blame others or circumstances, or like Adam, blame God: the woman you gave me . . . . Playing the victim seems better in the moment because it makes us somehow feel better, that we can maybe escape the responsibility for our own lives. We delude ourselves into thinking that it, whatever “it” is, is someone else’s fault. If only that someone would change, or not do this or do that, then everything would be better. That is all smelly stuff that comes out of a bull’s rear end. To the infinite contrary, personal responsibility is freedom. In a very real way, our destiny is ours to control, and that applies on a personal as well as a societal level. However much control we actually have (ultimately, God is in control of all things), we are not pinballs knocked around by mysterious forces we cannot understand. In biblical terminology, we have wisdom from God about the nature of reality, about how things work, which is ultimately in Christ. As I recently heard Doug Wilson say, it is Christ or Chaos. That goes for societies as well as any other relationship because it goes on within all of us, one or the other.

What does all this have to do with Christian nationalism, you ask? That’s a good question, and as I seem so often to do, I spent all of this post on prolegomena (prefatory remarks, or from Geek, to say beforehand) and didn’t answer that question. I think in my next post I will define “Christian nationalism,” and why we ought to be Christian nationalists. I recently heard this short Doug Wilson responds video as he reviews a segment on Tucker Carlson’s show, which gets the heart of why I’m for Christian nationalism. He says at one point, “Christianity stands between the progressive left and their final goal which is the abolition of man, and ultimate power for them.” It’s either us or them; we win, or they do. We are in an Ephesian 6:12 existential struggle for Christian Western civilization, and I have no desire to be on the losing side. We’ll see how in America as American citizens we exercise our agency in the next post so we can be on the winning side.

Eisenhower, the Military-Industrial Complex, and a Christian Response

Ever since Donald Trump came down the escalator at Trump Tower on June 16, 2015, it seems like I’ve been swallowing a consistent diet of red pills. The red pill reference, for those who don’t know, comes from the hit 1999 movie The Matrix with Keanu Reeves. As the character Neo, Reeves is given the choice by Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne, of two pills, blue or red. If he decides to take the blue pill, he will remain in the surface world that seems like the real world to everyone, but is actually an illusion. If he takes the red pill, he will go down an Alice in Wonderland-like rabbit hole called The Matrix and learn about a simulated reality in which everyone is trapped but doesn’t know it. Things are not what they seem. The list of the things that were not what they seemed to me is long and seems to be growing longer.

One of the more recent is American foreign policy. I’ve always been patriotic, and part of that was supporting the American military, which I still do. I supported all the wars America has fought, and thought they were necessary and good. That’s what I was told by those who surely wouldn’t lie to me. When Trump in the very first debate of the primary said the Iraq war was a terrible mistake, a disaster, I felt uncomfortable, as I think many conservatives did who supported it. We knew Trump was right but hated to admit it. I thought we had to get rid of Saddam, even though we found no weapons of mass destruction. I believed the CIA was mistaken, but surely, they weren’t purposefully lying to get us into war?

After six years of lies coming out of the FBI and CIA, I am no longer so sure about that given what Eisenhower warned about in his famous words, the Military-Industrial Complex. It is apparently a beast that must be fed no matter how much misery, destruction, and death it takes to feed it. Look at the tens of millions of people who died or were maimed and displaced because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And what exactly was accomplished in exchange for all that blood and treasure? Arguably, it made things far worse.

I’ve been familiar with that phrase most of my life, and even knew that it came from the president’s farewell address, but I’d never actually listened to or read it. I knew his words came as a warning about that complex, but never really considered what it might mean, and how seriously we ought to take his warning. Recently, I finally decided to read it for myself. When President Eisenhower gave the televised address on January 17, 1961, I was all of five and a half months old, so I don’t quite remember it. Reading it after all these years made me wonder why I, and so many of those of us who consider ourselves “conservatives,” never really took his warning seriously. We should have. War is a business that makes a lot of people a lot of money and gives a lot of people a lot of power, which is exactly what Eisenhower warned against:

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every state house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

 

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must ask ourselves since Eisenhower left office, which of the wars have been justified by the only reason for war: self-defense. I am upset that the military-industrial complex has been trying to get us into another war in the Ukraine, especially having sent $40 billion dollars we don’t have to enable it to continue. I wrote our senators with that complaint because both voted for sending the money. One of them replied that he was absolutely convinced supporting Ukraine is in our “national self-interest.” I used to not question that concept, but now I do. What does that even mean on the other side of the world? And who decides what is in our “national self-interest”?

Our first president gave us a similar warning in his farewell address:

Hence likewise they will avoid the necessity of those overgrown military establishments, which under any form of government are inauspicious to liberty, and which are to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty.

It can be argued that we’ve had an overgrown military establishment since Eisenhower, and that the temptation to fight “forever wars” is great, but why as Christians should we care about all this? Because Christianity is a full orbed view of all of reality, or what has come to be known as a worldview. Liberty and republican government bequeathed to us by America’s founders are direct result of our Christian worldview. If there was no Christianity, there would have been no America, no such thing as rights of individuals apart from the state. Our Declaration of Independence states that our rights come from God not government, and our constitution gives us the right to hold our government, and those who govern, accountable. That includes how our money is spent to defend us against enemies, foreign and domestic.

The day of conservatives uncritically accepting what the “military-industrial complex” says is in our self-interest, is over. The point of carrying a very big stick is so we never have to use it against the bullies of the world. Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump both knew that. The former won the Cold War because of it, and the latter defeated international terrorism. As Christians we need to take much more seriously our responsibility as citizens of a self-governing republic. Just voting and complaining is not enough. God in his providence enabled the genius of our founders to give us a republic unlike any the world has ever known. As Franklin said at the constitutional convention, we have been given a republic if we can keep it. I would argue it is worth keeping for the generations to come, and that means it is worth fighting for.

The Dividing Line in Western Culture? The Truth

I wrote a piece earlier this year about how Tim Keller like many Evangelical leaders believes there is some kind of moral equivalence between “the extreme left, and the extreme right.” Contra Keller, I argue that there is no “radical right” today, while the entire left is demonstrably radical by any definition of the word. This, however, isn’t an argument about definitions of radical, but rather what separates the two sides of the political/cultural divide in the 21st century West. That separation is at the heart of what determines whether civilization is possible, or not, and comments about “extreme” or “radical” or “far” one way or the other are beside the point. What is not, is truth. In our time, that is the only relevant divide; not party or position or policy, not liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, or even Christian or not, as obviously critically important as all those are. Why I believe this is because my fundamental conviction about reality is that Truth exists and is a found in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, who proclaimed himself, “the way and the truth and the life.” So, truth is about much more than statements of fact, or the way things are; it is a person.

Western culture decided to jettison that person a long time ago, and thus truth. Almost the entire world today is “western,” in that it has embraced secular Enlightenment rationalism. Because of that, it partakes of the disease of that philosophy’s logical conclusions, which disease has been germinating for several hundred years: the death of truth. Once the West rejected Christ, and thus Christiandom, it was only a matter of time before it rejected truth. Of course, truth cannot die because reality is defined by it and him, but we’ve entered the world of full-blown postmodernism where all that counts is “the narrative.”

Whatever that narrative might be, it is pushed by all the dominant levers of cultural and political power. It comes in the form of “racism” or “white privilege” or “gun violence” or Ukraine or “climate change” or the January 6 “insurrection” or covid, or the political class’s cause de jeur. To the left, which has completely taken over the Democrat Party and the media, all is politics, and the ideological agenda is all, so “the narrative” must serve that agenda. If anyone questions “the narrative” they must be “othered” for promoting “disinformation” and silenced. That means there can be no debate with “the narrative,” which is what happens when truth is sacrificed to ideology. People of the left will pay lip-service to truth, but the totalitarian nature of their politics gives lie to that. There can be no debate in an empire of lies built on narratives; those who question the narrative are the enemy.

Only in a world where truth is acknowledged to exist, and sought as an ultimate good, can there be debate and tolerance of divergent views. As soon as truth is thrown under the bus, all that is left is “the will to power.” Everything in the society of the left is a power dynamic, one oppressed group against another, privilege vying for power. Whoever wins controls “the narrative” and determines “the truth.” This is Marxism 101, or applied to society as a whole, cultural Marxism. There can be no compromise with Marxism. Anyone who tries to compromise with it, will be complicit with it, and eventually coopted by it. The only way to defeat it is truth, the affirmation of its existence, and the pursuit of it as the highest good. In this war, Christians must always affirm not truth in the abstract, but that truth is the person of God in Christ, that truth ultimately matters and is ultimately real because truth is God himself, and it only exists because God himself exists.

Which brings us to why truth is the dividing line of our time. Our elites are cultural Marxists, which has caused the liberals among them to flee for their cultural and political lives. To me, this is one of the most encouraging things to come out of the takeover of government and culture by the woke mob. What separates these liberals from the left is that they actually believe in truth, that it exists, that it is the highest good, and must be pursued, the “narrative” be damned. There has been a run on red pills by liberals over the last several years. You can see the shock on their faces, and hear it in their voices, that so many of the people they once considered their allies, have rejected and “othered” them simply because they seek and want to know the truth. These liberals are willing to call out “the narrative” as a lie or distortion, and the Marxists will never forgive them.

There are many examples of this, but one of the most amazing to me is feminist author Naomi Wolf. I’ve watched her often on Steven Bannon’s War Room for well over a year now, and her transformation has been remarkable. And because truth is a person, she has even had something of a spiritual awakening, as can be seen in this remarkable interview she did with Tal Bachman some months back. Others who have been red pilled are Joe Rogan, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Journalist Bari Weiss, who resigned from the New York Times because of it, and many others. Even Bill Maher almost sounds reasonable at times. And I’ve come to consider Elon Musk a cultural ally because, as he explained in a TED interview a couple months ago, he is obsessed with truth. That is a good obsession!

Why should we be thrilled with this growing cultural divide?

  1. On a temporal plane, we now have allies we would have never had before to fight with us against the Marxists in our midst. In a way they would have never been before, they are now committed to the Constitution, and liberty and justice for all.
  2. On a spiritual plane, it creates a more welcoming cultural environment for Christianity and the gospel. The true liberals, the ones who have been red pilled, have seen the ugly implications of postmodernism and the corresponding embrace of a politics of “the narrative” and rejection of truth. They will naturally be more open and accepting of Christianity. The virulently secular anti-Christian culture won’t change overnight, but a premium put on truth will make a difference in the long run.
  3. God is exalted and Christ is glorified when truth itself is exalted. To those who believe in and seek truth, Christians can plausibly point to and argue for he who is the Truth as Lord and Savior.
