I’ve been a Christian for more than 42 years, and I am more blown away by the grace, mercy, and love of God in Christ than I have ever been. It continually astounds me how God in Christ can take lives wrecked by sin and guilt and shame, and turn them into something beautiful for their good and his glory. Some time last year I started listening to conversion testimonies I found online, and it’s been enlightening, to say the least. I’ve written about this previously, but I used to think testimonies were of limited value because they were essentially subjective, about a person’s experience of God, and not based on the objective truth revealed to us in Scripture. I no longer believe that because God’s work in his people’s lives is amazingly revelatory. And in every testimony I’ve heard salvation is accompanied by a desire to read the Bible and go to church. Experiences that don’t drive people to God’s word and God’s people are not from God.

These testimonies to me are evidence of the power of Jesus’ name. When Joseph was told to give Mary’s baby that name, we learn it was because he “will save his people from their sins.” That is what Jesus does, and he has been doing it for almost 2,000 years. Mere ideas do not do that. Risen Saviors do. The power is in what Jesus accomplished for us. God’s perfect justice and love found it’s ultimate expression in the most unlikely of places in the most unlikely of ways, crucifixion on a Roman cross. When Jesus came back from the dead it suddenly made perfect sense to his Jewish followers because God had been preparing his people for this moment for 2,000 years. The entire Old Testament, Jesus said, was about him! He accomplished the redemption of his people, and when the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost he’s been applying it ever since.

I kept thinking about the supernatural power and genius of the gospel when I was listening to this testimony of an ex-porn star.

It is definitely not for the sensitive or youngsters, but it is powerful. His shame and guilt was crushing him until he met Jesus, and the only explanation for his transformed life is God in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. If anyone is under the impression that pornography is not pure Satanic evil, listening to Joshua will disabuse them of that. God can make the vilest sinner, including me and you, clean!
