As distressing as this over-hyped COVID-19 pandemic has been (a real threat to only a very definable fraction of 1% of the population), there have been some silver linings. One is that I’m questioning things I would have never questioned pre-COVID, and that’s a very good thing. Many of those questions are directed at modern medicine, and medical establishment, which has become for me a quintessential living example of the fall of man described in Genesis 3. Satan’s temptation to Eve was simple: God is a liar, and if you eat of the tree “your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” With one bite we became beings who think we get to determine our own reality, a very God-like capability. The problem, of course, is that Satan is a liar. The bigger problem,is that people believe him, just as Eve did.

What hath this to do with the COVID, ye ask? The entire Big Pharma medical industrial complex (including public health bureaucracies) believe they have the knowledge and capabilities to control human health. This, as we are always told, is for our good. As C.S. Lewis wrote, those in power with good intentions are to be feared more than those without them:

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Every time I leave my house and see masked faces everywhere, I see such tyranny. The medical establishment with their allies in the media, and politicians going along for a variety of motivations, have convinced Americans that this virus is something so to be feared that they will give up their liberty, and do exactly as their told to do. They do this, logically, because they believe that the medical establishment, the “experts,” know what they are doing, and trust they are telling them the truth. I’ve come to question this, which is one reason I don’t wear a mask, but there is something more at play.

I’ve come to realize is that medicine and how it is practiced today is completely devoid of humility, and without an appreciation of the amazing complexity of the human body as created by God. The people who run our health lives, or try to, are children of the Enlightenment who believe they have the knowledge and power to fix anything, including viruses and their relationship to the human body. I’ve come to see this as hubris born of Genesis 3, “you will be like God . . .” I recently read an article that starts with a sentiment that is sorely lacking in the medical industrial complex:

Human immune function is awe-inspiring – so complex and anatomically dispersed, yet wholly integrated operationally, that any implication of full understanding is mere posture.

This sounds right to me, especially as I witness the worldwide madness of political and medical leaders declaring that we can control the spread of a virus, if we just do as they say. No we can’t, and no they can’t. You can run, as the saying goes, but you can’t hide. Precaution is one thing, hubris quite another.

Another related silver lining is that I now question vaccines; I would have never done so before, and really had no reason to. There is no more accepted medical consensus today than that vaccines are good, full stop. There are no down sides, no trade-offs, no questions to be asked, no doubts to be expressed, or you will be shamed and silenced, branded an “anti-vaxxer.” That is not intended as a compliment. Behind this consensus is the assumption that science and medical experts fully understand the human immune system, and that it can be manipulated for our health and well being. I no longer believe that. Thank you, COVID! I’m also reading a book I would have never read before by the author whose piece I linked to earlier in the paragraph, J.B. Handley, called How to End the Autism Epidemic. And I just purchased another book I would have never read before, Bechamp or Pasteur?: A Lost Chapter in the History of Biology. Much of my perspective on the world is being turned upside down. Again, thank you COVID!

What does this have to do with Christianity? Or defending our faith to ourselves, or our kids? Only everything! You’ll remember that our Savior claimed not only to be the way, and the life, but the Truth. If don’t interrogate The Narrative, whatever it might be, to see if it aligns with the truth, the lies win by default. This is not easy or comfortable because, like in this case, it goes against the grain. Being the only person in Walmart without a mask is not necessarily pleasant, but my conscious before God will not allow me to do otherwise. Christianity also explains human nature like no other worldview can, and Satan’s lie that, “You will be like God . . . ” explains a lot.
